What is the Mayo Clinic Diet Plan ?

There are many diets that are highly effective at helping you lose weight and keep it off. The Mayo Clinic Diet is one of the best. If you’re striving to lose weight and you want solid and lasting results, this particular diet may be your dream come true. Let’s explore what the diet is about and what makes it different from other available diets and diet programs.

This unique fat melting way to eat and exercise was released and published in 2009. It was developed and is endorsed by the Mayo Clinic, a nonprofit worldwide leader in medical care, and is the only diet formally endorsed by the hospital. The developers of the diet found that there are five primary principles or good habits associated with weight loss and maintaining a healthy weight.

Not surprisingly, there are also bad habits associated with weight gain. The diet makes it easy by identifying the five good habits and the five bad habits. It then guides dieters through the process of letting go of the bad habits and adopting the good habits.

The plan is divided into three steps or phases. The first step is a two week period where you’ll adopt those good habits and let go of the bad ones that you may have already embraced in your current lifestyle. Many people lose up to ten pounds in the first two weeks. That’s a huge incentive to keep going and to make the lifestyle changes necessary to keep the weight off. But that’s not the end of the program.

The second step or phase of the diet is a longer term plan. It results in one to two pounds of weight loss per week until you reach your goal. During this phase you’ll focus on adding exercise into your life and learning about portion control.

The third and final phase is about maintaining your weight loss. During this phase you’ll learn new tips and recipes to live a healthy lifestyle.

So What Makes This Diet Different?

The primary difference between the Mayo hospital diet and others is that this one is focused on attainable weight loss through lifestyle changes. Many times people know they need to change their lifestyle to lose the weight but they’re not sure how to make those changes. But, this way of attacking being overweight not only tells you what changes are required but also how to make those changes. It’s a realistic diet for long lasting weight loss.
